| Biography |
Furnace's villainous career began after he was rejected from the San Diego-based, corporate-sponsored super-team known as Aegis. The team was formed by the Aesir corporation to combat the supervillain group, the Violators, who had been plaguing the city with industrial sabotage. Public tryouts were held to recruit members, and Furnace was one of the nineteen applicants who applied for a position on the new team. |
During the trials, Furnace's immense power was obvious, but so was his complete lack of control. His intense heat-based abilities were deemed dangerously unstable, randomly causing secondary fires that he could not manage. This made him a massive liability, and the corporation ultimately turned him away. It was also noted that during this time, he developed a clear animosity, specifically not getting along with fellow applicants Apex (who would found the West Coast Champions) and Seizure (who became a founding member of Aegis). |
Spurned by the 'heroes' and rejected by the very organization he tried to help, Furnace was left without a path. This made him a prime target for recruitment by the very group that had inadvertently started his journey: the Violators. He accepted their offer and has since become a mainstay of the villain team, frequently clashing with the heroes he might have once called teammates. |
| Capabilities and Motivations |
Furnace is a powerful thermal combatant whose body contains an insanely high core temperature. This provides him with a natural damage shield in the form of a 'heat aura' and grants him superhuman toughness, as his body must be durable enough to withstand its own internal heat. He can project brutal waves of heat as an attack and has a major ability to raise the ambient temperature of the entire area around him. His primary weakness is a severe lack of control; all of his heat effects are constantly at 'full strength', making him incredibly dangerous and destructive to his surroundings and anyone nearby. |
Furnace's motivations appear to be rooted in his rejection and the animosity he developed during the Aegis trials. Having been publicly branded as too 'dangerous' and 'unstable' to be a hero, he likely harbors a deep-seated resentment against the heroes and the corporate system that spurned him. His recruitment into the Violators gave him an outlet to unleash his powers without restraint and a clear target for his anger: the rival heroes he personally clashed with, like Apex and Seizure, and the organization that deemed him a liability. |
