| For a master of illusions and enchantments as powerful as Incantrix it is difficult to say what she really looks like, but she presents as a beautiful redheaded woman. She usually dresses in an archaic manner, but can make her clothing appear however she likes and will do so to match the current mores of the day from time to time. |
| A common Incantrix trick is to appear to be someone else, an alluring stranger or a romantic interest. She doesn't actually imitate people, she instead lets her magics do the heavy lifting. Whoever she has smitten or bewitched usually can't see through her enchantments, but others can. Thus, she prefers to strategically isolate those she plans to enrapture. |

| Biography |
Incantrix was once a mortal woman named Meroë Leclair, nearly four centuries ago. Her father was chief clerk to a Duke, and thus Meroë grew up near to wealth but not posessing any herself. As she grew up, she very badly wanted to improve her lot in life. She turned to witchcraft and magic...simple stuff at first, learned from a soothsayer among the local village folk from around the Duke's manse. Called Madame Goguillon, the seemingly kind old woman was helpful to all and was quite glad to teach her little tricks to the comely Meroë. Turned out Meroë had quite a knack for it too, and as her power grew so did the desire for more. More power, more status, more money...just more of anything she might decide she wanted. Madame Goguillon merely smiled kindly and said 'of course dear' and taught Meroë ever more questionable magics. The more entitled and demanding Meroë grew, the kinder and more accomodating Madame Goguillon became. |
Eventually Meroë hit a wall and her power stopped increasing. She kept pushing, but the harder she pushed the less improvement she gained. She became cross with herself, with everyone around her, and finally with Madame Goguillon. She accused the kind old woman of holding out on her, of conspiring somehow to prevent Meroë from reaching her true potential. Madame Goguillon merely smiled as usual and told Meroë that yes, it was true...there was a path to greater power that she had hidden from the prodigal young woman. |
Meroë demanded to be told of this path to true power, but the old witch prevaricated and hedged. It's too dangerous, she said. The cost is too high, she said. Smiling that same smile. Meroë waved aside all such cautions. She must be told the way, she must have the power. One last warning was offered: the hinted at path was without end and none who walk upon it can ever turn back. Meroë insisted, and so she damned herself to eternal restlessness upon the world. Unable to die naturally, unable to ever be satisfied. |

NOTES: Incantrix is an Enchantress / Morgaine le Fey sort of villainess. A few basic plotlines are, there's some powerful thing she wants, or someone else got something she thinks she is more deserving of, or she becomes obsessed with winning the love of a handsome suitor who is not interested in her. Occasionally, when she is feeling maudlin she will half heartedly pursue something that might end her curse and allow her to pass on. She's bipolar, but is manic far more than she is depressed. |
| Capabilities and Motivations |
Incantrix is a classic evil enchantress. She has broad magical abilities but is strongest at all forms of illusions and scrying. |
She is insidious, but subtle by preference. Though she can hold her own in a confrontation, Incantrix greatly prefers to come at thing sideways. A typical Incantrix encounter sees her influence undiscovered until the heroes are stuck into some plot or realize one of their number is acting strangely. Or perhaps, a hero starts to realize they are the ones acting weirdly. |
