Alex Durham is a huge former pro-am MMA fighter / part-time construction worker / part-time physical trainer. He wears gym bro clothing, lycra shorts and tank tops.
As Pounder he wears a heavy suit of brick-red power armor originally designed for industrial use but has been upgraded multiple times to turn it into a formidably destructive weapon system. Most notably, the armor suit's right arm is an oversized piston cannister with a push-rod pile driver that is able to rapidly strike multiple times in seconds with devastating force.
Biography
Alex Durham never saw a problem his fists couldn't solve. Growing up, his size and brute strength were his only assets, and he learned early that intimidation got him what he wanted far more efficiently than intellect. This mindset drove him into the world of pro-am MMA fighting, where he built a career on spectacle and overwhelming physical force. However, his short temper and aggressive demeanor, amplified by his steroid use, meant he was always one bad match away from a suspension. Outside the ring he was a volatile, controlling presence, often getting into brawls and alienating anyone who challenged his ego. His physical training and part-time construction work only further reinforced his belief in the supremacy of raw power over any other form of skill or planning.
The slow creep of 'roid rage' eventually eroded any shred of Alex's former self, leaving a hair-trigger temper and a simmering resentment for anyone who didn't respect his strength. Simultaneously, his fighting career plateaued and he had to find other work to make ends meet. He managed to get a gig for a firm developing an experimental industrial exo-suit, hired by an MMA enthusiast who worked there. His job was to learn how to pilot the exo-suit, and give feedback for improvements. Alex was suprisingly good at piloting the suit and found that he really enjoyed the feeling of power he felt while in it. But the confines of corporate employment, working around people with soft skills, and being under the thumb of stuffed shirt MBA's and project managers rankled. It was a system he couldn't bully into submission, which infuriated him.
Eventually, the R&D process drew to an end and Alex was let go as the project wrapped up. After stewing on this latest setback, Alex finally snapped and that night he broke into the company and stole the suit. Security showed up, and Alex easily brutalized the hapless guards, hospitalizing them. While he was at it, he angrily smashed things and wreaked an impressive amount of damage on the facilities and materials of his former employer, which inadvertently opened up a new line of work for him in the field of insurance fraud and sabotage in the months to come. After some success in this new venture he came to the attention of Enforcers Incorporated. He did some jobs for them, and in addition to lining him up with more lucrative contracts, they put him in touch with black market mechanics. At the recommendation of Bronto, after each job Alex put some money into making small upgrades to his armor suit over time.
Capabilities and Motivations
Pounder wields his destructive capabilities through a heavily modified industrial power suit, which grants him immense strength and the ability to fly. He combines this enhanced power with his natural, rage-fueled aggression and experience from his MMA background, making him a formidable and brutal melee combatant. His signature weapon is an oversized, piston-driven pile driver arm that delivers rapid, devastating strikes. Defensively, his suit provides heavy industrial armor, allowing him to shrug off damage. As he takes damage, his rage only grows, empowering his attacks and allowing him to relentlessly pursue his targets.
Pounder is driven by a potent mix of 'roid rage', a deep-seated inferiority complex, and a need for total domination. His rage is amplified by a string of personal and professional failures, making him resentful of anyone he perceives as having a better life or status. The industrial power suit represents the ultimate extension of his violent impulses and bruised ego, transforming him from a bullied, insecure meathead into a monstrous bully who believes his strength gives him the right to destroy anything or anyone who stands in his way. He works for Enforcers Incorporated not out of loyalty but because they feed his ego with upgrades and money, allowing him to inflict his violent worldview on the world.
