| Biography |
Manh Quynh is a good kid, raised by his father Nguyen to have an ingrained sense of honor, integrity, and an innate sense of right and wrong. Nguyen was a veteran of the Vietnamese Marine Corps that immigrated to the US after the fall of Saigon. Manh was trained by his father in Vovinam Viet Vo Dao from a very young age, and showed great talent. |
However, in his late teens Manh started noticing occasional bouts of shakiness. His family had limited resources, but his father got him the best medical treatment he could afford. Unfortunately, the nurses and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. The shakes worsened, progressively. Then, one day, Manh shook so hard he began to vibrate right through the floor. The world seemed to slow down, and on impulse Manh started running. And kept running, right through the wall, and the next wall, and the furniture and...well, everything. |
That's how Manh found out he's a mutant. Of course he told his father, and together they developed training techniques to allow Manh to get his powers under control. And also of course, the obvious and correct thing to do with such great power was to use it to fight crime and punish the wicked. After building a name for himself dealing with street crime as Turbofist, he joined forces with some of the MillMen to solve what started as a missing persons case and turned into the Enchante affair. Afterwards, Turbofist became a regular ally and then a full fledged member. |
His youth and good nature brought a new vibe to the team, and he was well liked by his teammates and the public. Surprisingly both Hype and Wrath, generally not very chummy individuals, each took Turbofist under their wings. Hype appreciated having another speedster to patrol with, and Wrath enjoyed having a sparring partner who could actually make him work for it. Also, Wrath ended up getting along great with Nguyen and the two of them would often drink Ba Muoi Ba and talk about 'Nam. Though they hadn't crossed paths during the war, it turned out they had been in some of the same places doing similar things...just at different times, they knew some of the same people, and had experienced a lot of the same bs. |
Over the years Turbofist went from being one of the fresh faces of the team, more than a sidekick but not taken as seriously as the older and more experienced members, to a mainstay. Also, his always upbeat personality and eagerness to help led to other heroes seeking him out for side concerns, and Turbofist was part of many duos and team ups. |
| Capabilities and Motivations |
Turbofist is a mutant with the power to vibrate every molecule of his body at hyper-speed. This gives him a variety of abilities such as running very fast, vibrating his molecules to pass through solid objects, and agitating the air around him to form a bullet-proof aura. Turbofist backs up his vibratory powers with a thorough mastery of the Vietnamese Martial Art Vovinam Viet Vo Dao. He combines his fighting style and vibratory abilities to deliver incredibly punishing hand to hand blows. Though Turbofist is intangible and can even be effectively invisibile while vibrating, he is definitely not inaudible due to a high-pitched buzzing noise caused by his vibrating molocules agitating the air. It sounds similar to a high speed turbine, which is the origin of the 'turbo' part of his superhero name. Though things he's running towards cannot hear the buzzing whine of his powers until the sound wave catches up to them, the overall effect prevents Turbofist from being truly stealthy. |
Unlike some speedsters that are always 'switched on', Turbofist's powers are consciously activated. When off, he has the awareness, athleticism, and reflexes of a very fit lifetime martial artist. But when he vibrates, he perceives the world as having slowed down and his awareness, reflexes, and movements seem normal to him but are actually very accelerated. On the plus side, he can live a normal life when not powered up. On the down side, he can be caught off guard and also if Turbofist is knocked unconscious his vibrations slow down until he returns to a normal state after a few seconds. Hypothetically, if this were to occur while he was passing through solid matter it would be catastrophic. This has almost happened twice but luckily his foward momentum carried him into the clear before he became fully solid; he required a recovery period afterwards (major twist). |
