| Biography |
Valerie Vogelsang was a premier prima donna, with an incredible vocal range allowing her to sing soprano, mezzo-soprano, and contralto with equal ease. She also had the personality to match, a true diva in all senses of the word. With a tempermental 'artisitic' approach to life, prone to the heights of intense passion for whatever caught her fancy to the inevitable depths of despondent depressions, she was a lot. But her rare skill and transcendent performances let her get away with it, within operatic circles she was firmly perched upon an enabling pedastal. |
Somehow, she came to the notice of an unknown entity from beyond. A sumptuously wrapped giftbox, dark bluish-purple with red and gold ribbons, was left in Valerie's dressing room after a performance, along with the usual flowers and tokens. Opening the striking box, Valerie saw inside a large golden metal curio in the highly stylized form of a flying bird or other winged creature. Picking the item up, it rapidly became scorching hot and Valerie screamed in pain. Her howl ignited a conflagration, burning her dressing room to ashes in an instant in a flash fire that was thankfully so hot it consumed all available materials and put itself out. The pain immediately faded, and Valerie discovered that she felt...great. Like, really really great. Looking down at the thing she held in her hand, it looked no different but Valerie knew that somehow it had changed her, and initially felt empowered. |
That initial feeling didn't last long however. When people rushed to her dressing room to investigate the noise and smoke, Valerie spoke to give assurance that she was unharmed, but the first word she uttered caused the air in front of her to ignite, the second surrounded her in an aura of fire, and the third caused a gout of flames to shoot forth from her mouth like a puff of dragon's breath. She wisely stopped talking. But it was starting to dawn on her that this new gift of power came with a cost...she could no longer speak or sing without consequence. |
The next weeks and months were an ordeal for Valerie. The fire in her dressing room and her inflammatory new speach impediment could not be covered up and 'authorities' got involved. Luckily, at some point a decision was made to involve the superhero scientist Microwave, an expert on the special challenges of being a living emitter of harmful energies. Sent to his lab for study and potential solutions, Valerie was at first difficult and petulant. But the lonely hours in between lab sessions, left to herself in a spartan non-flammable room that wasn't a prison cell but could certainly be mistaken for one, eventually forced her to self reflect and adjust to her new situation. She became more distant, sullen, and withdrawn for a while, but came to a new equilibrium. Leaving her past behind, she committed to the process and over time learned how to control her abilities well enough to not need to be confined to a fire proof box for the rest of her life. |
She was merely a resident and patient / subject of Microwave's lab for over a year, but eventually formed light friendships with various members of the Blue Team of the Millennial Men and some of the lab assistants and collaborators that came and went. Then one day the tech thieving villain Ing raided the lab to swipe something and in the general confusion Valerie got involved, using her fire powers against Ing and his goons. After that, she decided she liked doing something useful, took the name Firesong, and joined the Millennial Men as an auxillary member. Its still unknown what entity granted her powers, or even if it was a blessing or a punishment, but regardless Firesong went from being a volatile self-absorbed diva to an aloof superhero. So perhaps all's well that ends well? Time will tell. |
| Capabilities and Motivations |
Firesong was blessed (or cursed) by an otherworldly entity. This blessing / curse invested Firesong with strange powers over thermodynamism tied to her voice and creative spark. Her voice literally sparks flames. When she whispers, heat builds up and will quickly ignite if she continues. When she speaks, flames spring into being around her. When she sings, things get truly volatile. Her inability to converse without worrying about lighting everything on fire makes it difficult for her to have normal social interactions, but it also means that if she is silenced none or her powers work. |
Through long practice, she learned how to (mostly) control this effect and can do all sorts of creative things by humming, vocalizing, and melismas. She can fly with impressive aerial finesse, project intense flames offensively and defensively, and even heal herself...somehow. Firesong prefers to fly far above a battle, attacking opportunisticaly in such a way as to minimize the indiscriminant nature of her abilities. She is at a distinct disadvantage in a confined environment where she cannot fly or engage things at range since she tends to scorch everything around her, including allies, bystanders, structures, and objects. |
