Bart is a big, blocky, bluff man who looks tough as old boots. As BBB, an 8' mech with a shield and a big hammer.
Biography
Bartłomiej Bąkinski aka Patrol Sergeant Bart Bonk was an LAPD police officer with almost 20 years of service. He had become increasingly disillusioned with the criminal justice system over the years, but he didn't set out to take matters into his own hands. Then people close to him were collateral damage in a turf war between three inner city gangs. He got on a task force that helped arrest a bunch of those gangs' members, but the DA's office opted to not prosecute most of them, others pled out, and the only perps that saw any real jail time were the little fish that couldn't afford lawyers or didn't have information valuable enough to warrant a deal.
This was the last straw for Sgt. Bart. He only had a few months left to retirement, so he put his time in and collected his pension. Afterwards, he started going out at night and taking matters into his own hands. Using surplus riot gear and a billy club, he hit the streets. Isolating low level gangers first, he'd beat them up then shake them down for intel about their higher ups. He didn't kill those he targeted, but he did hospitalize them. Developing his knowledge of the who's who of multiple gangs and how they operated, he started working his way up the food chain with increasing carefulness. About this time those he had brutalized started calling him variations on big blue guy, blue riot dude, big basher, and so on. Eventually this melanged together to Big Blue Basher, and the name stuck. Its not the name Bart would have chosen for himself, but he was amused by the alliterative echoing of his real name.
This continued for many months, and eventually he himself became the target of a police task force to deal with vigilante violence across the city. As tends to happen places where the 'authorities' fail to protect the citizenry, there were others who were also taking the law into their own hands. During this period, Big Blue Basher crossed paths with a well armed man named Mister Calibre, when they were both after the same perp. The two ended up working together, and this led to further collaborations. Mr. Calibre was an arms maker, and couldn't resist making better gear for his new ally. Big Blue Basher replaced his DIY surplus riot gear with a durable shield with shock absorbent properties, an inertial hammer, a suit of tactical armor, and a full helmet with a police scanner, night vision optics, and so on.
As time went on, BBB and Calibre joined up with other similar-minded street level heroes and borderline vigilantes to form a loose and unnamed team that helped each other out in their respective battles against LAPD street crime. But things escalated quickly as gang members eager to fight back got their hands on the superdrug PT-9, which grants temporary superhuman capabilities and regeneration, and blackmarket gene-splicers that grant animal themed upgrades to those not afraid of a little body alteration. After an initial dark period in which BBB, Calibre, and the others were hard pressed to deal with suddenly superpowered adversaries, the Mod and several other Millennial Men arrived. As it turns out, PT-9 was developed by an unknown supervillain using the Mod's DNA, and the MillMen were determined to root out the source and put a stop to it.
In the process BBB and the others ended up working with the MillMen, providing their local knowledge of the city and its players in return for assistance from the experienced heroes. After it was all said and done, War-Man offered BBB and his pals an opportunity to band together as the Gold Team of the MillMen, recieving infrastructural support and training. In return, they would have to agree to register to become government sanctioned supers and to tone back their more brutal tactics. Some refused, unwilling to expose their identities to the government, or to soften their approach. But BBB, Mister Calibre, and a few others agreed. The line up of the Gold Team was somewhat fluid throughout its time, with ups and downs. BBB was a steady member, right up until the team went defunct in 2016. But Procellar, one of the younger members in the previous line up, and Missy Calibre (the daughter of Mister Calibre) started it back up again last year. BBB came out of retirement to help out, old but still built like a linebacker and very skilled with his trusty inertial hammer and shield. The team is slowly picking up steam again, attracting new members.
Capabilities and Motivations
Big Blue Basher is a physically impressive and competent man in a simple but effective suit of battle armor, armed with a simple but very durable shield, and a simple but very effective inertial hammer. His helmet includes simple but effective night optics and a wideband scanner that lets him rapidly scan multiple channels. The rest is grit, moxy, and a willingness to go the distance. Despite his lack of flash or raw power, BBB has proven many times over to be a very effective scrapper and a reliable ally.
BBB's armor suit is actually a small mech or armored exoskeleton. Bart stands in the central column from the head to the crotch of the suit and pilots it with a combination of manual, haptic, and synaptic subsystems. The arms and legs are robotic. Bart's head is in the helmet, but the helmet is oversized and seperately actuated like an antique diver's suit. It can only rotate 30 degrees to either side.
