Biography
Gerald Hernsfeld was a well-meaning and widely liked young doctor, known for his towering 7'1'', 300+ pound frame, which many mistook for that of an athlete. In reality, the empathic and nonviolent Gerald maintained a private practice and volunteered at clinics for the poor, more interested in healing than in sports. He was a rare individual, possessing a quiet, reserved nature that some mistook for slow thinking, though he was merely choosing his words with care. He lived a rewarding life helping others and seemed destined to do so for decades to come.
Gerald's life changed forever during a freak storm in San Diego. As he was preparing a syringe of an experimental wonder drug called Regent-R, a bolt of lightning struck his office. The blast set his lab coat on fire, shattered the vial, and threw him across the room, spraying him with the drug. His nurses found him badly burned and near death, but by the time he arrived at the hospital, his burns had mysteriously reduced to little more than a sunburn. He was released the next morning in perfect health, completely unaware of the profound changes the combination of lightning and Regent-R had triggered in his body.
Gerald soon discovered he could heal others' wounds with a touch, forcing him to accept that something impossible had happened. His miraculous recovery—and those of his patients—did not go unnoticed. The unethical biotech firm behind Regent-R, aware of its potential mutagenic effects, sent a five-agent team to capture him. The 'easy mark' fought back, discovering he could drain their vitality as they grew weaker. The fight ended with an accidental grenade explosion that gutted his office and forced the surviving agents to flee. This violent revelation, combined with the loss of his practice, convinced Gerald he had a greater responsibility to protect the innocent, and he resolved to become a superhero.
Capabilities and Motivations
Triage has innate control over the biology of himself and others. This primary ability allows him to heal wounds by absorbing the pain and damage into his own body, or to weaken opponents by draining their life force. His powers also grant him phenomenal self-healing, the ability to make prodigious jumps, and vast potential to develop further bio-control abilities. Beyond his powers, he is naturally massive and physically imposing, possessing a strength and durability that complement his supernatural gifts.
Driven by a deep, unwavering empathy, Triage seeks to take the pain out of the world. He is a truly caring individual who looks out for his friends and feels a profound responsibility to protect the innocent from villainy. Though he is non-violent by nature and prefers healing, he has accepted his new role as a protector. He willingly endures the pain he absorbs from others, filing it away as a necessary sacrifice for the greater good. He made his public debut at the AEGIS trials, where he connected with fellow heroes Apex and Makeshift.
