BACKGROUND | |||||
Height: 5' 9" | Hair: Black
Weight: 137 lbs | Eyes: Brown
Appearance: In her human form Kanae is a tall, athletic woman apparently of Polynesian descent. In her “true” form, she is grotesquely muscular, her face distorted, and her ears covered by folds of flesh. Her hands and feet become flipper-like in this state. She looks likes a human caught halfway into the process of turning into a seal, which is more or less the case.
Personality: Kanae is on the surface emotionally stable and well adjusted considering her circumstances. She is kind, compassionate, curious, and intelligent. She does not think of herself as human. In her youth, treated as an outsider in a small town, Kanae turned to the sea as her refuge. It did not comfort the good people of the town of Innsmouth to see the young girl diving cheerfully in water cold enough to kill an unprotected man, and it took Kanae little time to realize that her talents terrified her neighbors. The New Circle offered Kanae her first taste of acceptance, but it also made her feelings of isolation from “normal” humanity that much worse. The discovery of her true genetic legacy did not help. Where others might have retreated into themselves in her situation, Kanae has continued to explore, dedicating herself to the pursuit of knowledge. She is starting to gain something of a reputation in scientific circles. While Kanae will fight to protect others, and is effective under the right circumstances, she is not inclined towards traditional super-heroics, and is much happier in a lab or diving in the sea than on the battlefield. She does not find her “true form” disturbing, but she is affected by others reactions, and will only assume that form when she expects to be alone, or when she is expecting trouble. She makes a very good living participating in undersea research projects and occasionally performing weather-control for hire. |

Background: On a small beach in Massachusetts, a young scientist watched the tide, and tried to keep his PDA dry. The sun had nearly set, and he was afraid. The young man nearly ran as the creature rose from the water. It moved towards him with grace and power, like a predator. The skin was dark brown, the fur on its head black, inhuman muscles huge and bloated, the face monstrous. The creature began to shake, to convulse, water streaming and spraying from mouth and eyes and every part as the creature twisted, shrank, changed. The girl was beautiful. Tall and strong, dark brown skin, a mane of black hair reaching her lower back. She smiled kindly, and stepped from the creature’s footprints. “You wanted to meet me, yes? To learn my story.” Her voice was gentle. The young scientist, still frightened, nodded, and began to record. “My name is Kanae. Once I thought that I was an Atlantean princess.” Kanae told her story. A lighthouse keeper had raised a strange daughter, ignoring the disapproval of townsfolk unused to single mothers. The girl, Kanae, had slowly learned of her remarkable strength, her remarkable mind, and her ability to dive deep beneath the waves. Her mother refused to answer increasingly desperate questions. Kanae was fourteen the first time she changed. Deep beneath the water, deeper than she’d ever dived, she had panicked. Water poured into her, filling her muscles, making her feel strong, invincible. She could hear the shape of her surroundings, perceiving the world in a way that seemed miraculous. She rose to the surface, and ran to her mother … who then recoiled, screaming. Kanae screamed as well, and the water pored from her, leaving her in her human form. Her mother spoke to her that night of a beautiful man who had become a monster. After much weeping and recrimination, a decision was made. Within a month, Kanae found herself sitting at the feet of an old man from Japan, hearing tales of a time when nightmare creatures ruled the Earth, changing humanity, leaving their mark. The young man listened as the girl shared her struggles, her studies under The Master and others, her joy and terror as she learned the source her powers, her occasional adventures with the New Circle. “I remember meeting the Atlanteans,” she said, a smile masking pain. “They were so beautiful. They were kind, but I was not one of them.” Kanae rose, and the young man found it impossible to believe that the monster and the girl were one and the same. “That’s all for tonight,” she said, and headed back into the water. “I hope my story helps you find what you need.” She dove into the sea, beautiful by moonlight, and was gone. The young scientist vanished, along with all his notes and records, that same week. His family reported that the young man’s apartment had been ransacked, and stank of sulfer. |

Powers/Tactics: Kanae has many of the powers associated with Selkies and other mythical sea-creatures, including the ability to “sing down the lightning” and communicate mind-to-mind both with men and creatures of the ocean. In her “True Self” form, she has Superhuman strength and resistance to harm. In both form she is able to dive far beneath the sea and comfortably hold her breath for very long periods of time. Kanae will match her attacks to her opponent. Against tough, slow targets outdoors she will usually Call Down the Lightning to blind and deafen the foe; against fast targets, she will rely on her True Voice Ego Attacks. If in monstrous form, she will sometimes use brute force on foes who have managed to close with her. Kanae is slow moving compared with many Supers, and may use Sweeps and other moves to maximize her effectiveness in combat. |
|||||
Campaign Use: Kanae is not a core member of the New Circle, though she is a student of The Master. She might be called in if the players are investigating anything to do with the marine or life sciences or Edomite horror and don’t have an expert of their own. When called in by the New Circle itself Kanae provides a much needed scientific point of view. Plot Seed: The Slug has managed to partially transform one of the PCs. Kanae is part of the team assembled to help reverse the transformation. When she realizes that her old foe is responsible, she offers more direct help. Plot Seed: Kanae contacts the PCs and explains that Doktor Pandemonium has found a way to control her (she knows of his connection to Demon, but thinks of him as just another Morbane). The New Circle are unavailable, and she needs help. Can the PCs help? Is this a trap? |
