Containing the Situation
|
While Jonas sedated both Zombie Daile and surreptitiously the troubled Jimmy Hunt,
and Miles bossed people Jon headed back to the parking lot and rounded up the civilians.
Jon coaxed the civilians to give up their cell phones and get into the back of his
truck, except for Peter who called "shotgun!".
|
On the way back to the diner, where Jonas had left his van and thus most of his
supplies, Jon gaslighted Peter into helping the team keep the other civilians in
line, playing on the running bullshit screen of a virus outbreak Jon and Jonas had
cooked up for the civvies prior in between offing zombies and pursuing Daile into
the abanoned factory.
|
Jon claimed that he and the team worked for a contracting firm employed by the government
to contain this sort of thing; Peter asked if he might be able to get a job, citing
his "skills" and the likely loss of his current employement due to the unfolding
events. Jon played along and said he'd talk about that after the situation was resolved.
|
Jon then called the situation in to Section M and was connected to an Agent Pryce.
After explaining the situation and assuring the Agent that the site was secure and
all targets were in the bag, heavily obfuscated over the non-secure connection,
Jon was instructed to transport the civilians, zombies, Hunt, and Daile to a Section
M facility west of Lake Elsinore.
|
After some shuffling around between vehicles, the team regrouped at the Jamul diner
where the adventure started from, loading the zombie remains into Jonas's van, and
the sedated Zombie Daile. Miles drew an elaborate hermetic around Zombie Daile,
above her bound form on the roof of the van.
|
Jon convinced Zak to drive his semi, and loaded Raven, Peter, and the unconscious
Jimmy into the back. Jon let Dorothy, who had proven her usefulness in the fight
against the zombies, sit on the jump seat in the cab with him and Zak.
|
Ebon took to the skies and provided surveillance. Finally situated, the team set
off, leaving Miles's sports car and Jon Bregg's pickup at the diner to be retrieved
later. The drive back towards San Diego and up the 15 was uneventful.
|
Ambush
|
But not long after pulling off onto the windy and narrow 74, as the sun gave way
to night, the intrepid little convoy was ambushed by a gang of Dwarven bikers and an unlikely Troldfolk ally.
Four of the Dwarves got in front of the semi and punctured its tires with caltrops,
while two other Dwarves and the Troll bracketed in from behind.
|
|
|
Zak displayed some impressive driving skills and easily braked and slid his rig
to a clean stop without jackknifing, but Jonas was not so skillful and slammed on
his brakes a tad too late, sliding into the back of the trailer; fortunately the
two sturdy vehicles were unharmed and the collision amounted to a mere fender bender.
Jonas and Miles, the two durable Mystics in the van, were unharmed by the crash...though
zombie remains did roll about in the back.
|
The Troll dismounted his bike and quickly assaulted the rear of the van, attempting
to rip open the doors...but again Jonas's sturdy work van was up to the challenge
and despite some metallic grinding the doors remained latched. Jonas unbuckled and
exited the vehicle, while activating his various alchemical implants, including
Nightvision. Miles dithered a bit, vision hampered by the darkness and unsure of
what was going on. He cautiously Warded himself, just to be on the safe side.
|
Meanwhile to the front of the altercation one of the Dwarves (apparantly a female)
opened fire on the halted semi with a machine gun, shooting both Zak and Jon in
their repective chests.
|
The Hunters Respond
|
Jon was injured but thanks to his lycanthropic nature he was not unduly worried
by the injury. Zak on the otherhand was severly wounded and passed out immediately.
Dorothy ducked down below the level of the rig's dash and was unharmed.
|
Pissed off, Jon unbuckled and launched himself out the shattered windshield, letting
his feral nature show as he vaulted clear over the hood of the truck, cleared some
distance, and pounced upon one of the Dwarves sitting astride a motorcycle in front
of the halted semi. Unfortunately, though a bit startled, the Dwarf (Hajarl) kept
his composure and swung big, managing to knock Jon to the ground slightly dazed...thus
spoiling the cinematic attack.
|
|
|
After narrowly being missed by a crazed Dwarf with a hand cannon doing a drive by
(Bruid), Jonas made his way around the van to the rear, and seeing a biggish man
(Rollo in human form) yanking on his van doors, Jonas wasted no time and headbutted
the interploper. Though he got good effect on target, the foe was neither felled
nor inconvenienced by the attack, and responded in kind to put Jonas on his ass.
|
Seeing events unfold, Ebon reverted to human form in midair, allowing himself to
plummet before landing softly on the back of the semi trailer, from which vantage
point he proceeded to call out murders of crows on the Dwarf bikers below. On his
descent he was narrowly missed by a Dwarven potshot, but subsequently was shot in
the belly by one of the other Dwarves as Ebon called down yet another murder of
crows.
|
Miles was shot in the shoulder by a strafing Dwarf (Aron) but was entirely unharmed
thanks to his Wards and his innate bullet resistance. He left the vehicle and conferred
with Dorothy, who had fled the truck cab. She rolled under the van to get a better
position, Miles moved off the edge of the road to get a line of sight on the back
of the van.
|
Still fighting at the feet of his foe, Jonas tried to regroup but found the would-be
van jacker to be incredibly resilient and could not get the upper hand.
|
|
Finally becoming nervous by the great strength and durability displayed by this
opponent, Jonas decided to play the ace up his sleeve and doped up with a vial of
Vampires Blood. Immediately feeling the dark power flowing thru his veins, Jonas
was nonplussed when his opponent looked surprised and slightly fearful and asked
"You are das Wampir?", and proceeded to "hulk out" into a 7 foot tall green skinned
monstrosity and then punted Jonas over 20 feet away.
|
|
Dorothy, seeing Jonas get punted, ran around the back of the van and launched a
series of kicks at the knees and shins of the horrifying green thing she found before
her, which surprisingly the creature actually seemed to feel. By this point most
of the Dwarves were too busy swatting off crazed crows to do much thanks to Ebon
constantly calling down crows upon them to peck and scratch and suppress.
|
|
|
The crazed red-bearded Dwarf on the bike completed another strafing loop, driving
right behind Dorothy and taking a shot at the back of her head with a giant revolver,
but somehow missed entirely despite having a perfect shot at the back of her gourd.
From a safe distance, Miles attempted to use Evenaster's Equilibrium but couldn't
make out a clear target in the darkness.
|
Jonas Ascendant
|
Pissed and supercharged, Jonas leaped back into battle, flying clear over the speeding
Dwarf strafer and Dorothy, to land on the toes of the Troll. Jonas flung himself
forward with tremendous force and delivered a mighty headbut directly to the Troll's
chest. The massive impact sent the Troll tail over teacup through the air to land
in an unceremonius pile on his head not far from where Miles was hanging out. One
shot knock out.
|
Miles, finally seeing a target, tried to unleash his Equalizer, but bricked the
incantation and it fizzled.
|
Ebon made the time to call Section: M to report the problem and ask Agent Pryce
to send agents to assist the group out of their predicament. Agent Pryce said he'd
have reinforcements there within 5 minutes "or so".
|
Jonas cleared the distance to the Troll with another big leap and attempted to smash
the Troll into sweet oblivion, but the regenerative powers of the thing had already
returned the monster to consciousness, and the Troll was able to block the attack.
|
Dorothy ran by and tried to help, and though she almost stumbled in the darkness
off the side of the road she somehow managed to retain her balance and still land
a quick kick to the Trolls ribs on the way by. She saw Miles in the darkness a bit
further on and ended her sprint next to him.
|
Despite being shot while down, Jon Bregg healed up and lept back into action to
take a Dwarf off his bike (Hajarl), pin the Dwarf to the ground, and proceeded to
tear into the target with his claws. However the resilient Dwarf was able to withstand
the assault, pull out a sawed off shotgun, and blast Jon at point blank range twice,
knocking Jon back and down both times and inflicting serious injury. But fortunately
for Jon his lycanthropy kept healing the damage back.
|
Miles asked Dorothy to hold his flashlight steady on the Troll, freeing up his hands
and hopefully allowing him to more successfully cast his big spell. But though Dorothy
complied and held the flashlight steady, Miles couldn't seem to muster the spell,
leaving Jonas to his own devices against the Troll.
|
Fortunately, with the Vampires Blood flowing thru his veins, Jonas was more than
a match for the Troll and was able to parlay his increased speed into a unbeatable
combat advantage. Jonas proceeded to engage in a knock down drag out fight with
the Troll, allowing his Ogrish bellicosity take charge. Though the Troll put up
a mighty struggle, he simply could not withstand the mad flurry of devastating blows
Jonas was able to deliver. Finally, Jonas choked the monster out to prevent breathing
long enough to put the Troll into unconsciousness temporarily.
|
Victory
|
The strafing Dwarf, seeing the Troll go down, informed the other Dwarves as his loop
passed them up again, and the apparent leader (Goran) ordered a retreat. All the
Dwarves save one turned their bikes and fled, most pursued by an angry little flock
of ravens pecking at them. The one being savaged by Jon (Hajarl) was unable to retreat,
and was eventually incapacitated and captured.
|
In the aftermath, Miles studied his field spell book and switched in a stupor spell
and cast it to reduce the Troll to a droolling vegetative state before he could
wake up.
|
Though exhausted after the Vampires Blood ran its course in his system, Jonas mustered
enough energy to take blood samples from the captured Dwarf and Troll, and amputate
a finger from the Troll (it grew back rapidly) for future experimentation.
|
|
GMs Note: This was an awesome session; everyone had a lot of fun.
|
Having said that, it did not go as expected. Rollo should have come in and done
a smash and grab on the back of the van, removed Zombie Daile from the Hermetic
circle Miles put around her, and then teleported out.
|
Things went off the rails immediately when Rollo biffed the roll to rip open the
back of the van...rolling a bunch of 1's. Then Jonas got on him and refused to stay
down. The tweaks we made to Jonas proved to be effective, and he tanked Rollo effectively.
|
I should have had Rollo just go full-Troll and get the job done, but I was waiting
for a dramatically appropriate moment and events got out of hand. Once I saw the
way the cards were falling, I just let it roll. The Hunters earned their unexpected
victory, and I can always make more new bad guys.
|
XP Awarded: this session was almost all combat, so I didn't award as much
XP. Jonas was pretty unanimously voted MVP for his epic battle with Rollo. Miles
on the otherhand did nothing effective and raised the teams existing concerns about
his capabilities. The group had a discussion after the session about tweaking Miles
a bit to make him more useful.
- Ebon: 3
- Jon: 3
- Miles: 2
- Jonas: 3 + 1 MVP
