A well meaning and well liked young doctor
who maintained both a private practice and
volunteered at clinics for the poor around
the city, Gerald Hernsfeld was a rare individual.
And that's not even considering he towers
over people, naturally huge at 7'1" and
around 300 lbs of all natural muscle. Most
people assume he's a football or basketball
star, but such activities never interested
the empathic and nonviolent Gerald (much
to the dismay of the atheletic staff of
every institute of learning he ever attended).
|
|
Gerald would likely have lived a long and
rewarding life of helping and healing other
people as a doctor, if not for a freak bolt
of lightning that struck his office one
afternoon during an unusually heavy storm
for San Diego, just as the good doctor was
filling a syringe with a new experimental
wonder drug called Regent-R produced by
a local Biotech firm. The bolt didn't hit
him directly, but close enough to light
his lab coat on fire, shatter the vial and
syringe spraying Regent-R all over him,
and throw him across the room.

"Don't worry, this will hurt me more than it will you." |
|
His nurses rushed in to find him badly burned
and battered, and barely breathing. All
three nurses, with 50 years of experience
between them, believed him to be near death.
Gerald was rushed to the nearest burn unit,
but by the time the ambulance arrived it
appeared that his burns weren't as bad as
they had looked...not much worse than a
really bad sunburn. He was still out cold,
but his vitals were all solid, so he was
admitted for observation.
|
|
By morning he was perfectly fine and released
himself from the hospital, returning to
help clean up his office and continue his
practice. His nurses were shocked; he should
have been hospital bound for months, even
assuming he would ever recover yet there
he was in perfect health. He just assumed
his nurses were exaggerating his condition
after the accident and resumed his practice,
but soon came to the realization that he
could heal the wounds of others and was
forced to consider that something had happened
to him.
|
|
Unbeknownst to him the company that makes
Regent R isnt entirely ethical, and knows
that the compound might have a mutagenic
effect under some circumstances, and his
miraculous recovery did not go unnoticed
by them. They put him under surveillance,
and when people with broken limbs and bodily
injuries that Gerald attended to made startling
recoveries as well a decision was made to
nab the good doctor to study him.

A team of five agents assualted Geralds
office as he was working on insurance papers,
trying to get the most coverage he could
for some of his needy patients from their
poor policies. Striking with SEAL-like precision
the five agents easily secured the building
before Gerald even really knew something
was going on, and likey would have had him
in hand in short order. However Gerald soon
proved to not be an easy mark, and fought
them. The agents soon realized they were
getting weaker, and their mark seemed to
be getting stronger! Within thirty seconds
what should have been an overpowering five
on one attack turned into a bear fight,
with the bear winning!
|
|
Finally Gerald had cleared some space around
himself, hurling agents through walls and
landing punishing blows that were felt even
through body armor. In desperation one of
the agents forgot their orders to take Gerald
alive and went to toss a grenade, but flubbed
the throw and it bounced back to his feet.
The agent was blown to smithereens, Gerald
was thrown thru a window to the street by
the backblast, and the other four agents
took the opportunity to flee.

|
His office gutted by the explosion, and
his ability to drain the vitality of others
revealed to him, Gerald realized that he
had true superpowers and was faced with
a real dilemna. After hours of introspection
he determined that he had a greater responsibility
to people to use his abilities to protect
the innocent from villainy. Referring his
patients to other doctors, he put his practice
on hold and resolved to be a superhero.
|
|
Gerald had heard about the AEGIS trials,
from the local news, and decided it would
be a perfect opportunity for him to make
his entrance into the superheroic community
and appeared there for the first time as
Triage. At the trials he hit it off with two other young heroes, Apex and Makeshift
