It is said that the sport of pit fighting has its origins among the Ogres. It is easy enough to believe that a race as dim-witted as the Ogres would contribute fights to the death to the culture of the old world. In years past most Pit Fighters were criminals or prisoners of war thrown into a ring and force to fight or die.
These days however there are professional Pit Fighters in addition to the fodder. They seek excitement, glory, accolades, and perhaps a wealthy sponsor. Successful Pit Fighters can become quite wealthy, furthering the mystique. Even slave Pit Fighters have been able to win enough to buy their freedom when luck and skill combine. Most die horribly of course.
Villages are too small to support a permanent arena, but most large cities have some accomodation for them, and some burgeoning towns have smaller, ruder facilities as well. Many Pit Fighters spend their entire career in the same arena, short as that may be, but some travel from arena to arena, chasing big winners purses and, intentionally or not, reducing the chance for other fighters to observe their style and find a fatal flaw to exploit.
